John Dawson, an Englishman, was first found in colonial days in Charles Co., Maryland, where he settled on land received by a land grant.

He married Rebecca Doyne, daughter of John Doyne, an Irishman.  He and Rebecca arrived in Maryland around 1670, from where is uncertain.

They supposedly met on the ship which brought them to America, falling in love during the voyage.  Even though religious conflicts were present, they still married.  John Dawson was a member ofthe Church of England, while Rebecca was a Roman Catholic.

From research conducted by Lee O. Dawson and .,K. Dawson on the PG County Dawson line in the Tippecanoe co., Hist. Soc.  Transcribed in 1973 by unknown.  Available on rootsweb surname Dawson in 1999 archive.

"In Charles Co. MD in the middle of 1600 was one John Dawson and his son Nicholas.  There were four DAwson men in the area and they are believed to be John's sons as well John, Charles, Thomas, and Edward.

From Vahary & Dawson Ancestors gecom at rootsweb:

John Dawson came to Maryland from Yorkshire, England prior to 1700. Grant of two manors of Land, one near Port Tobacco on the Potomac and the other was in Prince George Co. (now Montgomery Co.) in Maryland near the town of Dawsonville. His wife Rebecca Doyne was a daughter of a Irish Gentleman who had a grant on Chickamaxon Creek in Charles Co., Md.

Another Source from " History of Fayette & Greene Counties, Pa." page 595:
John came to the American Colonies prior to the Revolution sailing from Whitehaven, England.

from the "Family of John Dawson, of Prince George Co., Md., abt 1700"
prob. written 1870-80?:
"John Dawson is said to have emigrated from the north of England sometime before 1700. Whether he came from Whitehaven, in Cumberland, or from Yorkshire is uncertain. By some he is said to have gone into Maryland by way of Philadelphia, where he tarried for a while; others understand that he emigrated directly to Maryland.....His death is supposed to have occurred before 1720, from the fact that his son Thomas, who died in 1800, aged 92, and was, consequently, born in 1708, barely remembered the event as one which happened in his childhood.
He married Rebecca Doyne, daughter of John Doyne, an Irish gentleman, who had a grant of land on Chickamoxon creek, in Charles county, about
thirty miles below the place where the city of Washington now is. They settled on Broad creek, near the Potomac River, about twelve miles
below the site of Washington, in Prince George county, where he died.

Other sources say he was born in England abt. 1640.

From Dawson Colonial Immigrants:

1680 John Dawson "transported in 1680"  Same source says that a William Dawson, Sr. immigrated by 1665 wil William Jone Jr. and Anthony Dawson"

This is probably about another John dawson (married to Sarah)
