Will of Thomas Clayton
4 July 1557 - proved 5 Oct 1557 (Consistory Court Wills Register 1553-1571, Vol. 8, p. 268, microfilm XA 10/6, in West Sussex Records Office, Chicester, Sussex, England).

This will in bold writing but very faded contains no signatures and names no witnesses. Based upon the wording of the will, the make was probably a Roman Catholic, reflecting his Norman heritage, which he would have retained despite the acts of the Reformation Parliment 1529-1536, breaking the Church in England headed by King Henry VIII away from the Church in Rome. The will, naming his wife Margaret, a son John, a daughter Alice and a son-in-law (_______) Nalovite, was partially transcribed by Louis E. Jones, 21 May 1984. Other children may have been named in ellegible portions of the will.
