Der zuerst 1122 auftretende Adolf, comes de Altena, ist identisch mit dem Grafen Adolf von Berg (1094-1170). Sein Sohn Eberhard begründete die Linie Altena, die in der nächsten Generation mit Adolf von Altena einen bedeutenden Kölner Erzbischof stellte. Altena selbst war seit 1188 Kölner Lehen. Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts verlegten die Grafen ihren Sitz nach Burg Mark; von dort bauten sie das Territorium Mark aus.
