Het geslacht Van Borssele is bekend sinds de 12e eeuw, maar er is een vermelding van ene Stepo van Bersele uit 1088. Het is echter waarschijnlijk dat deze Stepo en de later genoemde Adam van Bersele afkomstig waren uit Bazel, een dorpje bij Antwerpen. De oudste echte vermelding waarvan vaststaat dat hij afkomstig is van Borsele is Nicolaus de Bersalia, genoemd in 1243. De familie had zijn stamslot, Troye, op het (toenmalige) eiland West-Borselen. De familie was van groot belang in geheel Zeeland. Er zijn waarschijnlijk weinig gebieden op de beide Bevelanden en Walcheren, die niet ooit aan een lid van dit geslacht behoord hebben.
