Mr. Montanye, a veteran of World War II, was struck and carried 56 feet on the hood of a car operated by Paul E. Johnson, 22, Black River road. Montanye was taken to Mercy Hospital where he had been in critical condition since the accident. He died at 8 a.m. yesterday.
Police said it was dark and raining at the time and that Montanye was wearing dark clothing. Johnson, according to police, was driving west on Water street, about 30 miles an hour when he suddenly saw the pedestrian walking toward him in his car's lane of traffic. Johnson said he was unable to pull to the left to avoid Montayne because of an approaching car. Police said Johnson applied his brakes with his car skidding 30 feets before it struck Montayne.
