Notes about Joseph Trimble Tracy

JOSEPH T. TRACY, state auditor of Ohio since 1920, when he was elected as the successor of Vic Donahey, has had more than forty years of consecutive experience in public life and the administration of public office.
The Tracy family has lived in souther Ohio for more than a century. His grandfather, Dr. Jonathan Tracy, came from Steuben County, New York, to southern Ohio in 1816, and married Elizabeth Westbrook, whose father lived on Stout's run, near Rome, in Adams County, Ohio.  Dr. Jonathan Tracy was one of the founders of Moore's Chapel, one of the first Methodist churches in Ohio.  The father of the state auditor was Noah Tracy, who spent most of his life in Ohio, but who at the time of the birth of his son, Joseph T., was living at Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
Joseph T. Tracy was born December 28, 1865, son of Noah and Nancy Ann (Freeman) Tracy.  Shortly after his birth his parents returned to Scioto County, Ohio.  The son had the environment of a farm, was educated in country schools, attended the Normal School at West Union, and for five years was a teacher and county school examiner.  He then became deputy clerk of court of Scioto County. ; From 1893 to 1899 he was county auditor.  On July 1, 1902, he was appointed municipal supervisor in the Bureau of Inspection and Supervision of Public Offices, a post of service he filled for fourteen years.  Prior to that he had been one of the original members of the commission appointed by the state auditor to organize the bureau.  Because of this service in setting up the bureau and the accounting systems he established in seventy Ohio cities he has frequently been referred to as the "father of Ohio State public accountancy."  With this record of public service he first went before the voters of the entire State in 1920 as candidate for state auditor.  He was elected, and his repeated reelection to that office has been a proof that quiet and efficient public service is recognized and rewarded by the great mass of voters.  He was reelected in 1924, 1928, and again in 1932.  As auditor he has been a member of the State Board of Control and State Emergency Board, and he is the only major official of the State whose service has been continuous since 1920.  Mr. Tracy is a Republican and the first three times he was a candidate for state auditor he had a tremendous margin of votes, and his popular strength in all sections of the State was such that he also survived the Democratic landslide of 1932.
Mr. Tracy's hobby is the collection of antiques.  He usually spends his summers in a rustic cabin on the Scioto River near Bellepoint.  He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Knights of Pythias, and the King Avenue Methodist Church at Columbus.
He married, April 11, 1894, Miss Alnore Arnold at Portsmouth, Ohio. She died January 9, 1921, the day before Mr. Tracy was sworn in for his first term as state auditor.  The five children of their marriage are Stanley B., Helen W., Christine L., Juliet G. and Roger W.  All of the children attended Ohio State University.  The oldest son, Stanley, who served with the aviation corps in the World War,is in business in New York City, and the son Roger resides in Cleveland.  The three daughters are Christine, Mrs. Leonard Vessy;  Helen, Mrs. E. L. Huber; and Juliet, Mrs. Paul Mitchell.  Mr. Tracy has four grandchildren.
