Schuyler Humphrey Van Gorden was born on a farm just north of Breesport, which is not far from Horseheads and Elmira.  Sometime between 1855 and 1860 the Van Gorden family moved to a farm only a few miles from Breesport, just southeast of the village of Erin.  This is where S.H. remained until he headed west in 1868.

In February of 1868, S.H., who was just 16, began making plans to leave New York.  During the next few months he worked extra hard for his father, his relatives, and his neighbors.  On July 14, 1868, he wrote in his diary: "Got up and got ready.  Went to Horseheads.  Took the stage to Elmira and the cars to Buffalo.  We [S.H., his brother Lon, and friend Frank Barnes] got our tickets for $14.00 to Chicago. Got to Buffalo and took the train to Toledo."  They then took the cars from Toledo to Elkhart and Chicago and arrived at Annawan, Henry County, Illinois, at 5:00 a.m. on July 16th.  They stayed with relatives in Henry County for several weeks, helping with haying and harvesting.  Then on August 31, 1868, the three of them, plus Frank Van Gorden, headed for Iowa.  They went to Rock Island, to Port Byron, and then took an overnight trip on a Mississippi River boat (for $4.00) to Dubuque.  On September 2nd, they took the train to Cedar Falls.  Two days later they rode the train to Nashua, Iowa, and then went on to Fredericksburg where S.H.'s sister, Mary Malinda "Lind" Carpenter was living.

There is no evidence that S.H. ever bought land in Iowa.  He lived most of the time with Lind and Harry Carpenter, first on their farm and then in Fredericksburg after January 1869. During 1869 and much of 1870, S.H. went to school off and on, worked as a farm hand, and occasionally clerked in a store at Sumner, Iowa.  By this time his disenchantment with farming was beginning to show.
