Notes about Benjamin Montanye Fetter Jr.

My sister did a fair amount of research in the early 1990's, before the internet was readily available, and she did not get further back than our Great-Great grandfather, Benjamin Montanye Fetter. I have a copy of a letter written in 1856 on his behalf from the Bridesburg, PA IOOF, declaring him a member in good standing and wishing him good luck. The name "Montanye" always intrigued me. He spent time in the California Gold Country, including being listed as a witness in an indictment against the Sierra County Treasurer and being paid $187 by the California State Legislature in 1857, and then being accused of embezzlement himself in 1858. I need to do more research on the details of all that. He was a farmer in Santa Rosa, CA, for about 10 years. I remember seeing his annual accounting book over twenty years ago (I think he made a net profit of about $270 for the year), but have no idea who has it or if it still exists. He starts appearing in San Francisco directories in the 1870's, as a mining and real estate agent. He was in New Mexico when he died, and is buried there. His widow and three of his children, including his sons Frank Montanye Fetter, Jr and Frank Culin Fetter (my great-grandfather) are interred together at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Brisbane CA.
