Notes about Milton Catlin Guest

should mention here that John William Guest’s 2 oldest sons fought for the North in the Civil War (Milton Catlin Guest and Stephen Lewis Guest).  Ebenezer’s 2 oldest sons fought for the South.  Milton Catlin Guest was severely wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor, which was the biggest embarrassment for General Grant.  Milton took a ball to the hip.  As he was dragging himself off the battlefield towards a wooded area, he took a ball to the ankle.  He was taken to a northern hospital in Washington DC.  Washington DC had been fortified because surrounding states were seceding from the Union.  You had to have a military pass to get in and out of Washington DC.  Milton was laid up in the hospital for nearly a year.  His father, John William Guest, left Wisconsin to visit Milton in the hospital.   Milton’s leg was saved and John brought him back home to Wisconsin.
