Notes about James Richard Head

Glasco Sun (Kansas), June 19, 1896, page 4:

The State failed last Friday to make a case against the Glasco men
charged with assault with intent to kill, upon Geo. Hannan, city marshall of Glasco.  They were then arrested for plain assault and battery.  Saturday morning the four men, James Head, Sr., his two sons, Jim and Ivon, and Frank Pottenger, were given a trial before Justice Anderson, and at midnight the jury returned a verdict of guilty against the two Heads, Jim senior and juniorm, and a verdict of not guilty for the other two.  The court assessed a fine of one dollar each and costs against the two declared guilty.  Costs and all amounted to about $60, and as they were unable to pay they were committed to the county jail.  We understand there was considerable feeling stirred up at Glasco over the case, but the verdict appeared to give general satisfaction.  County Attornery Wilmouth and E. S. Ellis conducted the prosecution, while Pierce Butler and P.B. Pulsifer appeared for the defense.

Later: The total amount, fine and costs, was figured down to $36 and on Wednesday the amount was paid down to court and the prisoners discharged.

(Note: James Head Jr. married Nellie Prince about 1901. Nellie's sister May married Mark Hare.  James Head Jr. was shot by Mark Hare, then in 1903 James Jr. shot and killed Mark Hare.  Nellie and May Prince's father was the newspaper editor Ferd Prince, who had been outspoken in 1903 about his dislike of the Head family. The above article gives some background for his feelings.)
