Lived in community of Hickey, about 6 miles south of Henderson, Rusk County, Texas.

In January 1918, Claudine Shockley was at her parents' house, where she was arguing with her husband Tommy Hill in the yard. Joseph Shockley shot and killed Tommy Hill. During court proceedings in 1918, Joseph Shockley was told to leave Rusk County. The family resettled to Dallas.
