Notes about Sir William de Nerford of Panworth

WILLIAM DE NERFORD, son and heir, a minor at his father's death, must have been of age in 1270. He was a knight by 1277. In June 1294 he was summoned to attend the King at Westminster upon urgent affairs (the recovery of Gascony), and exempted from the general summons for service there; in August 1295 he was ordered to repair in person to the sea-shore near Dunwich, there to organise defence against the French. He was summoned 26 January 1296/7 to the so-called Parliament at Salisbury, by writs directed Willelmo de Neyrford. This summons to a Parliament not regularly constituted did not, even according to modern doctrine, originate an hereditary peerage. He was summoned to the muster in London for service against the French in Flanders 7 July following, and to a military council at Rochester before Prince Edward, the King's Lieutenant in England; in December he was joint commissioner to take, in the Prince's name, the fealty of knights and freemen of Norfolk and Suffolk, in the form enjoined by the King by word of mouth. Again in 1298 he was summoned for service in Flanders, and against the Scots in 1297, 1298, and in 1301.
He married, 4 February 1287/8, Pernel, elder daughter and coheir of Sir John DE VAUX (died 1287), son of Sir Oliver DE VAUX. He died between 12 June and 9 July 1302 (k). His widow, stated in his inquisition post mortem to be aged 40 in 1302, took an oath not to marry without the King's licence, and was to do homage for lands held jointly with her late husband by the Quinzaine of Easter 1303. Her marriage was granted in November 1303 to William de Sulley, and she died between 1 May and 20 August 1326. [Complete Peerage IX:469-70, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(k) When the writ issued to the escheator. Besides his 2 elder sons, who succeeded him in turn, he left issue: Piers, Edmund, Felicie, and Maud.
