Notes about Henry de Bodrugan Sir

[Curt Hofemann]

Henry Bodrigan was sum. to Parl. 26 Oct. (1309) 3 Edw. II, by writ directed _Henrico de Bodrigan_, but had been dead 9 months when the writ was issued.  (a) It seems clear that the man so sum. was the powerful feudal Baron of that name, of Bodrigan Cornwall, s. and h. of Sir Henry B., who was living 1283.  He m. before 26 Oct. 1288, Sibyl, widow of Piers le Power, sister and h. of Walter de Mandeville.  She, who was then aged over 24, was living 18 July 1304, but d. in or before 1308.  (b) He d. in Jan 1308/9.  Writ for _Inq. p. m._ 23 Jan 2 Edw. II.  None of his descendants were sum. to Parl.

(a) Although the House of Lords has been very liberal in conferring peerages on gentlemen living about this time, who would have been much surprised to learn that they enjoyed that honour, yet the House has never yet held that a summons to a dead man created an hereditary Barony descendible to heirs general. V.G.
(b) Writ for _Inq. p. m._ on William Bodrigan 26 Mar. 1 Edw. II.
