Notes about John de Sutton Lord Dudley

TITLE: Sir John Sutton, Knight, married Margaret de Someri and in her right was Lord Dudley. She was daughter of Roger de Someri and sister and co-heir of John de Someri. It was through her the Suttons acquired the Castle of Dudley and considerable estates, including the Manor of Seggesley Chase of Pennalt, the manor of New Synford-Regis, County Stafford, as also the town of Dudley. He took the arms of de Someri: Or two lions passant in pale azure. These being the original arms of Fitz-Ansculph. whose daughter, Beatrix, married Fulke Paganel. A grant was extorted from Sir John Sutton by which he passed away by deed, bearing date at Westminster 19th of Oct., 19 of Edward II, all his right and title to the castle and manor of Dudley to Hugh le de Spenser, but this grant thus made being extorted from him when in prison, and in fear of his being put to death. it was cancelled upon accession of Edward III and the property restored.
