Notes about John de Montagu 1st Lord Montacute, 2nd Earl of Salisbury

Fought in the campaign in France, 1346-47 in the retinue of his brother, the Earl of Salisbury, and then in the campaign of the Prince of Wales from the time of the landing at La Hogue on July 12, 1346, at the battle of Crecy on August 26, and at the siege of Calais which fell August 4, 1347.  He was with the Prince of Wales in France in 1356 and fought on September 19, 1356 at Poitiers.  Early in 1378 he was retained to serve the King as a banneret with a force consisting of another banneret, 5 knights, 53 esquires, and 60 archers and in July took part in the Duke of Lancaster's abortive attack on St. Malo. In 1384 he had a dispute with his brother William which the Court of Chivalry decided against him and was subsequently removed by the King from the office of Steward of the Household (Complete Peerage, Vol IX:87-88).
