Sohn des Herzogs Wilhelm I. von Berg und der Anna von der Pfalz, Tochter von Kurfürst Ruprecht II.
Adolf X. rebellierte 1397 gegen den Vater, verwüstete Düsseldorf und inhaftierte den Vater. Er wurde geächtet, mußte sich 1405 unterwerfen und folgte 1408 als Herzog von Berg. Er erneuerte nach Streit alle kurkölnischen Lehen, geriet schroff gegen Lothringen und andere Prätendenten um Bar und mußte nach seiner Gefangennahme 1417 völligen Verzicht leisten. Er folgte seinem Onkel Rainald 1423 als Herzog von Jülich und begann einen jahrelangen Erbkrieg um Geldern gegen das Haus EGMONT. Er konnte Geldern trotz kaiserlicher Belehnung nicht gewinnen, obwohl er anfangs gegen Kaiser SIGISMUND stand und 1414 dessen Krönung in Aachen verhindert hatte. Er verschuldete völlig, unterstützte die römische Obödienz gegen den Konzilspapst von Basel, stand damit traditionell gegen den Erzbischof von Köln, sicherte Monschau-Montjoie und zog 1428 Lievendal-Wevelinghoven ein.
