Notes about Marmaduke Beckwith Morton

From: Shirley Carter (e-mail: (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX))
The following info on Marmaduke is from "The Magazine of Virginia
History and Biography", It's from a set of books entitled Genealogies of Virginia Families. It is found under Henry Wood, First Clerk of Goochland and his Descendant's. It was written by the late Reverend Stephen O. Southall (descendant). It quotes a letter of Mr. Marmaduke Beckwith Morton written from his home in Russellville, Kentucky not long before his death when he was upwards of 90 years of age and as he says himself, was then just a "worn-out" old man.
He tells us that he was born in Louisa County about 4 miles from the homes of his uncles Captain Samuel Pryor and Mr. William Pryor, who lived near each other in Goochland County and whom he remembered distinctly after all those years, especially his Uncle Captain Samuel Pryor who had a scar on his head from a sabre cut in the War.
"When I was a youngster I was a pupil in an old filed school in Goochland where I was taught the multiplication table and Arithmetic up to the Rule of Three, with a smattering of Dilworth's spelling book. My teacher, a man named Michael Holland, used to get drunk Friday evening and remain so until about ten o'clock Monday morning. He was a brother of James Holland who was indicted for murder and defended by Patrick Henry; and also a brother of George Holland who hung two Tories during the Revolutionary War on the Ground Squirell Road leading from the mountains to Richmond. I have seen the tree on which they were hung."
"In 1815 I moved with my father and family to Logan County, Kentucky and went to school four months to my brother Joseph Morton and got a very imperfect knowledge of English Grammar. Thereafter he lived on his father's farm as a field hand until 22 May 1818, when he went to Bowling Green to live as a clerk in the store of Judge Davidge."

Marmaduke Beckwith Morton was the ninth of twelve children of William Jordan Morton and his wife Martha Pryor, who was the daughter of William Pryor and Sarah Wood. He was born in Louisa Co. Virginia four miles from the homes of his uncles Captain Samuel Pryor and Mr. William Pryor, who lived near each other in Goochland County. He remembers his uncle Samuel had a scar on his head from a sabre-cut in the war. Uncle William Pryor had three sons, John, William and Samuel Pryor, one of whom, John married Sally Smith early in life and went to live in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; another, Samuel married Sally Drumright and moved to Kentucky; and the third, William died an old bachelor. Uncle William Pryor also had three daughters, Patsy who married Robert Meriwether, Judith who married Fontaine Duke and Polly who married James Turner. Mr. Morton's mother Martha died in 1800.
In 1815 he moved with his father and family to Logan Co. Kentucky and went to school four months to my brother Joseph Morton, and got a very imperfect knowledge of English Grammar. Thereafter he lived on his
father's farm as a field hand until 22 May 1818, when he went to Bowling Green to live as a clerk in the store of Judge Davidge.
He was married first to Nancy Caldwell in 1827 and she died in 1834, by whom he had three children. Secondly he married her sister Betsy Caldwell in 1838 who died in 1880, she was the mother of his daughter
Nancy.

Marmaduke Beckwith Morton was the County Court Clerk of Logan County, Kentucky and also Circuit Court Clerk. He was Cashier of the Southern Bank of Kentukcy, Justice of the Peace, and a prosperous farmer.
