They got married
There was an apparent conclave on Little River and Hardins Creek in Southern Wilkes County of families drawn together their by kinship. There we find James Willis, Lewis Willis, Moses Willis, Joshua Willis, and Daniel and John Owen, and William Procter with adjoining lands. James, Moses and Lewis were probably brothers. In Thomas Grant's return of 1817 in the estate of James Ballard, husband of a daughter of James Willis, there is a payment to Dinwiddie Harrison for part of his share in the estate of Moses Willis for which Ballard became responsible during his life. Harrison was the husband of another daughter of James Willis who could inherit only if James could.
"Orange County Virginia Families" asserts that their brother Joshua died in Virginia in 1820 and, therefore, the Joshua found in the records must be the son of Lewis.
Executors of the estate of James Willis: James Willis, Jr., William Berry, Jones Kendricks. Test include Charles R. Carter. Will mentions wife, Judith, and children, Benjamin Franklin, William Berry Willis, Child in esse, and Fanny Gafford and Elizabeth Hansford. Probated 1813 in Wilkes County.
There is thought that James might first have been married to a Procter and that Judith was his second wife. Another work says that James's first wife was Ann.
Waid Scott Willis letters assert that James was a Captain in the Revolution.
