John Sinclair, Master of Caithness, having quarrelled with his
father, was imprisoned by him in the Castle of Girnigo for seven years, and died there by famine and vermin, September 1575. It was rumoured that he had been so hardy that his gaolers, at the instigation of his brother, William Sinclair of Mey, had to finish him off by giving him salt beef but witholding all drink until he died raving. However, one day, while William was taunting his captive brother, the frenzied Master of Caithness leapt upon him and tried to strangle him with his chains. William got away with some difficulty but died from the bruising within a forthnight.
