Notes about William Babthorpe

[Doc Johnson]

"OSGODBY, in the parish of Hemingbrough, wapentake of Ouse and Derwent, and liberty of Howdenshire; 2¾ miles NW. of Hemingbrough, 2 miles NE. of Selby. Population, 185."

Not far from the original site of the Babthorpe family.

"BABTHORPE, a farm house in the parish of Hemingbrough, wapentake of Ouse and Derwent, and liberty of Howdenshire; 1 mile ESE. of Hemingbrough, 5 miles ESE. of Selby.  This is all that is left of the original Babthorpe Brackenholme estate.

Here the ancient family of the Babthorpes flourished for many centuries; and intermarried with the best families in this county.  By Kirkby's inquest, here was one caracute of land held by Ralph Babthorpe, of the Bishop of Durham, by Knight's service; where 12 caracutes made a Knight's fee.

After a 60 year long dispute over the Babthorpe Brackenholme estate was settled in 1565, the estate was finally back in possession of Sir William Babthorpe.  Afterward, Sir Wm. Babthorpe, during in the reign of James I. sold this estate to Richard Bowes, Esq. of Burton's Monast.  It appears that even though Sir William finally had controll over the Babthorpe Brackenholme este, he and his family continued to live on their Osgodby estate.  This is indicated by his only child of his second marriage (Christian or Christina Babthorpe who was born about the same time as the estates return to Sir William) was referred to as being "Of Osgodby", as well as the children of his first marriage being referred to as being "of Osgodby".  Additionally, when Sir William died in 1581, he was referred to as being "of Osgodby".
