Door huwelijk van Ernestina van den Boetzelaer met Anthony van Haersolte in 1639, kwam de Toutenburg in het bezit van de familie van Haersolte. In 1675 bleek de Toutenburg het grootste huis te zijn in het Ambt Vollenhove, want het kasteel bleek de meeste vuursteden te bevatten. Dit aantal vuursteden was in die tijd een maat voor het heffen van belastingen. Maar het verval van de Toutenburg schreed niettemin voort, want het trotse kasteel bleek weinige jaren later nog maar zeven haardsteden te hebben. Op topografische tekeningen uit deze tijd bleken de gebouwen al behoorlijk aangetast te zijn.

Tegen het eind van de achttiende eeuw konden de restanten van het slot voor een zacht prijsje door Arend Sloet worden gekocht, die eigenaar was van de naastgelegen havezate Oldruitenborgh. Door deze aankopen kwam het gehele gebied ten zuiden van het stadje Vollenhove in één hand.
