Gesneuveld tijdens de 'gulden sporen-slag'.

Hij gold als de beste Franse ridder en aanvoerder van zijn tijd. Daarom kreeg hij de leiding over het leger dat in 1302 naar Vlaanderen trok. Hij had tijdens zijn jeugd een aantal jaren in Kortrijk gewoond en kende daardoor waarschijnlijk goed het slagveld. Dit heeft hem nochtans niet kunnen helpen op 11 juli 1302 tijdens de zgn 'gulden sporen-slag' .
Toen hij zag dat de Franse ridders dreigden te worden terug geworpen ging hij zelf ook ten aanval, op zijn prachtige strijdros Morel. Zijn aanval was dusdanig krachtig dat hij diep in de Vlaamse rangen doordrong en volgens de legende ook een stuk uit de Vlaamse banier wist te scheuren. Hierop werd hij echter door lekebroeder Willem van Saeftinghe van de abdij Ter Doest neergeslagen. Eveneens volgens de legende smeekte hij het leven van zijn paard te sparen. Tevergeefs, want die legende verhaalt verder dat de Vlamingen die hem aanvielen hem toe sneerden dat ze zijn Waals (Frans) niet verstonden. Hij is samen met zijn paard en honderden Franse ridders gesneuveld.
