Hans Maximilian Gustav von Haeften (* 13. Juni 1870 auf Gut Fürstenberg bei Xanten, Nordrhein-Westfalen; † 9. Juni 1937 in Gotha, Thüringen) war ein deutscher Generalmajor.

Leben [Bearbeiten]

Haeften entstammte einem alten geldernschen Adelsgeschlecht und war der Sohn des königlich preußischen Staatsarchivars August von Haeften (1832–1871) und der Elisabeth von Hochwächter (1840–1916) auf Gut Fürstenberg.

Von 1899 bis 1901 besuchte er die Kriegsakademie und war ab 1904 im Generalstab tätig. Während des Ersten Weltkrieges war er im Dienstrang eines Oberst Leiter der Auslandsabteilung der OHL.[1] 1916 wurde er Leiter der Militärstelle des Auswärtigen Amtes. 1918 war er der Verbindungsoffizier des Generalstabschefs zum Reichskanzler.

Nach dem Krieg blieb er beim Militär und war von 1919 bis 1931 Leiter der Kriegsgeschichtlichen Abteilung des Generalstabs. Von 1931 bis 1935 war er Präsident des Reichsarchivs Potsdam. Zuvor war er dort bereits als Direktor der Historischen Abteilung tätig gewesen.[2]

Haeften erhielt die Ehrendoktorwürde der philosophischen Fakultät.

Haeften heiratete am 21. März 1903 in Berlin Agnes von Brauchitsch (1869–1945), die Schwester des Generals der Kavallerie Walther von Brauchitsch). Aus dieser Ehe entstammen die Tochter Elisabeth (1903–1980) sowie die Widerstandskämpfer Hans Bernd von Haeften (1905–1944) und Werner von Haeften (1908–1944).
