He married, 1stly, 20 May 1782, at Gretna Green (a runaway match),(c) and again 7 June 1782, at Apethorpe, Sarah Anne, only child and eventually heir of Robert CHILD, of Osterley Park, Middlesex, and of London, Banker, by Sarah (afterwards BARONESS DUCIE OF TORTWORTH), daughter of Gilbert JODRELL, of Ankerwyke, Bucks. She, who was born 28 August 1764 in Lincoln's Inn Fields and baptised at St. Giles's-in-the Fields, died of fever 9 November 1793 at the Lodge, Phoenix Park, near Dublin, and was buried 10 December at Apethorpe, aged 29. He married, 2ndly, 24 March 1800, by Special licence, at "the house of Mr. Dundas," Wimbledon, Surrey, Jane, 2nd daughter and coheir of Richard HUCK-SAUNDERS, formerly HUCK, M.D., by Jane, daughter of Peter KINSEY and Anne his wife, sister of Admiral Sir Charles Saunders, K.B. He, having been for some years blind, died of atrophy 15 December 1841 at 83 Marine Parade, Brighton, and was buried 27 December at Apethorpe, aged 82. His widow, from whom he had been separated for many years, died 26 March 1857 at Brympton House, Somerset, aged 77, and was buried 8 April at Apethorpe. M.I. at Brympton. [CP 12[2]:577-8]

[c] According to the version of this well-known elopement given by Robert Elliott, one of the "parsons" there, Lord Westmorland was hotly pursued by Mr. Child, who caught up with him at Hesketh, between Penrith and Carlisle, and shot the leading horse. One of the Earl's servants, however, cut the leathers suspending the body of the pursuing carriage to the springs and before Mr. Child could find a post chaise in which to continue the chase, Lord Westmorland reached Gretna with the 3 remaining horses. In consequence Robert Child entailed Osterley Park and his immense fortune on his heirs female, so that no heir male of his son-in-law should benefit. Such heir female was, on her mother's death, the Earl's eldest daughter, Lady Sarah Fane, who married, 23 May 1804, George (Villiers, afterwards Child-Villiers), 5th Earl of Jersey.
