Nicolaas was weinig gelukkiger dan zijn halfbroer Frans, natuurlijke zoon van de secretaris Peter van Gils. Hij verkwistte in korte tijd de aanzienlijke nalatenschap van zijn vader en werd uitverkocht.Nadat zijn roerende goederen waren verkocht moest ook zijn erfgoed worden aangewend om de schuldeisers tevreden te stellen. Slechts 100 gulden mocht hij behouden.Nicolaas was bode op Keulen en Aken , en verkeerde voortdurend in nijpende geldnood, waaruit hij dan vaak door zijn zwager , heer Wouter Colen , kapelaan op het kasteel te Drunen en rentmeester van de graven d'Oultremont werd gered.
