Hendrik Polling vertrok op 3 augustus 1902 als stucadoor naar Winschoten enop 3 aug.kwam hij weer in Assen.
In 1905 trad hij toe tot de gemeentepolitie te Assen. Vanaf die datum tot 1933 diende hij als agent 1e klasse.
Vanaf 01-01-1933 tot 01-02-1939 diende hij nog als reserveagent bij de gemeentepolitie.
Hendrik Polling was een zeer gelijkmatig en zachtaardig mens. Hij kon boeiend verhalen over zijn
politieavonturen, waarin veel personen voor kwamen met de naamstoevoeging lamstralen en
padjakkers.
Als politieagent stond hij in Assen bekend als "de Zwarte", vanwege zijn donkere uitkijk.
Hij had een hekel aan het opmaken van een proces-verbaal, maar regelde iets liever met woorden of met zijn vuisten(vrij groot net als zijn voeten)
Hij had ambtshalve veel bemoeienis met de armenwijk "Tranendal" in Assen, waar veel drank misbruik voorkwam, ondanks de armoede.
