Als 16 jarige is hij vrijwillig in dienst gegaan en via het KNIL in Nederlands Indie terecht gekomen. Door gebrek aan vooropleiding heeft hij het nooit verder kunnen brengen dan tot adjudant-onderofficier. Verbitterd over verdere promotiekansen neemt hij ontslag, maar hij blijft tot zijn pensionering (in 1936) in Nederlands Indie wonen.
Er zijn 7 kinderen, waarvan de oudste zoon op 3 jarige leeftijd overlijdt. In 1914 is een kind overleden.
In Amsterdam woonde hij: Van Speykstraat 120-I.

Kostbare munten-verzameling.
Een Malanger, de heer B.Th.M. Opdam, is in het bezit van een kostbare muntenverzameling, waaraan de eigenaar niet minder dan 29 jaar lang heeft gearbeid. De heer Opdam stelde zyn mooie muntenverzameling ter bezichtiging en is bereid om andere belangstellenden eveneens daartoe in de gelegenheid te stellen, meldt de Malanger. Voor liefhebbers is het inderdaad de moeite waard om de talryke munstukken uit verschillende tijdperken en landen te bezichtigen.
De z.g. Balineesche kèpèngs, de munt welke op het eiland betrekkelyk kort geleden nog algemeen gangbaar was als pasmunt, is in de verzameling goed vertegenwoordigd. Op een paar uitgaven na, is een serie aanwezig van het jaar 713 tot omstreeks 1800.
Verder zyn er V. O. C. muntstukken in groote verscheidenheid in de verzameling. Hiervan heeft de heer Opdam een beschryvende catalogus vervaardigd. Zie verder in de krant.
Zondag 11 februari 1934 feest t.g.v. hun 25 jr echtverbintenis, adres Rampal Koelon 7 te Malang.
