POMPE VAN MEERDERVOORT (jhr. Johannes Lydius Catharinus), geb. te Brugge 5 Mei 1829, overl. te Brussel 7 Oct. 1908, zoon van jhr. Johan Antoine, kapitein der infanterie, en van Johanna Wilhelmina Hendrica de Moulin.

Hij werd kweekeling aan het militaire hospitaal te Utrecht en in 1849 benoemd tot officier van gezondheid 3e klasse der marine, in 1856 2e klasse. Hij behoorde tot het tweede zoogenaamde maritieme detachement, dat op Decima en later op de daaraan grenzende plaatsen verblijf hield, legde daar den grond tot het geneeskundig onderwijs in het toen nog ontoegankelijke Japan en keerde in 1863 naar Nederland terug. Door schipbreuk der ‘Calypso’, waarmede zijn leerlingen en zijn verzamelingen in 1863 naar Nederland moesten komen, ontbraken hem vele gegevens voor zijn hoofdwerk, het verhaal van zijn verblijf in Japan. Doch omdat alles op ervaring en waarneming berustte, kon hij dit werk evenwel voltooien.

Op verzoek eervol ontslagen, hielp hij hier te lande twee japansche leerlingen in hun studiën voort; hij vestigde zich eerst als arts te 's Gravenhage en later te Bergen op Zoom. Als adviseur vergezelde hij in 1874 een der vroegere leerlingen, den admiraal Ennomotto, in diens ambassade naar St. Petersburg. Gezant van Japan te St. Petersburg (zooals Nederl. Adelsboek zegt) zal hij wel niet geweest zijn.

Hij gaf in het licht: Vijf jaren in Japan 1857-1863, Bijdragen tot de kennis van het Japansche keizerrijk en zijn bevolking (Leiden 1867, 68, 2 dln. 8o, met platen en kaarten; Een toelichtend woord aan de lezers van mijne ‘Vijf jaren in Japan’, in verband tot den aan mij gerichten open brief van A.C.J. Vreedenberg ('s Gravenh. 1868); Notice sur le Yama-mai (la Haye 1863), naar aanleiding van een geschrift van den japanschen tolk en prof. te Leiden, Hoffman, over ingevoerde zijdewormen; Het Paardenvleesch beschouwd als voedingsmiddel. ('s Gravenhage 1867, 8o).
