Henderika was bij het huwelijk nog minderjarig. Haar ouders en grootouders waren allen reeds overleden. Hierdoor traden als voogd bij het huwelijk op; Gerrit Willem Petersen, zonder beroep (oud deurwaarder), wonende te Apeldoorn en Egbert Eggens, rietdekker, wonende te Borger.
Er was echter een complicatie, nl:
De vader van Leonardus, gaf geen toestemming tot het huwelijk.
Dit was voor Leonardus een reden om die toestemming alsnog af te dwingen middels de kantonrechter. De kantonrechter heeft daartoe zowel vader (Joannes Jacobus) als zoon (Leonardus) op 6 maart 1885 opgeroepen om op 11 maart 1885 te verschijnen voor het kantongerecht. Vader had echter de euvele moed om géén gehoor te geven aan deze oproep. Hierna besloot de kantonrechter toestemming te verlenen tot het voorgenomen huwelijk tussen Leonardus en Henderika.
Bij de stukken was gevoegd een "bewijs van onvermogen" van Leonardus, hetgeen betekent dat hij was vrijgesteld van betaling der kosten. De registratie had plaats op 12 maart 1885 met de aantekening 'gratis'.
Als getuigen bij het huwelijk traden op Willem Hoks, borstelmaker, oud 28 jaar, wonende te Groningen en Johan Casper Frederik Meijer, koopman, oud 58 jaar, respectievelijk een halfbroer en een oom van de bruidegom, alsmede Jan Warries, timmerman, oud 32 jaar, zwager van de bruid, Jacob Godschalk, borstelmaker, oud 55 jaar, geen verwant. De laatste 3 genoemden wonende te Assen.
