In the early years of Edmée's life, her father was away for several months each year for business in the Belgian Congo where he imported wine and exported ivory to Belgium. He also spent a few years running a plantation. He contracted a tropical disease, probably amoebedysentry, that he never managed to get over completely and eventually complications killed him in 1910, aged 44. He died at home having been bedridden for several months.
She and her two children appear on the passenger list of the s.s. Koningin der Nederlanden (Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland, or the "Nederland Line"), leaving Amsterdam for Batavia on June 23, 1923.
