Birth: 1916 Amsterdam Gallatin County Montana, USA
Death: Mar. 10, 2007 Bozeman Gallatin County Montana, USA
Catherine Dyk of Bozeman went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the home of her daughter near Bozeman. She was born in 1916, the eldest of the nine children of Henry and Jennie (Mulder) DeHaan, who came from Holland and settled west of Amsterdam. Catherine attended Barnhart School and Manhattan High School. She married Peter S. Dyk in 1940, and they began their married life as farmers in the Pass Creek area north of Belgrade. While raising four daughters, she greatly encouraged and assisted her husband in all his farming success. Since she had been raised on a farm she was very capable and hard-working and was very content with managing the affairs of her household. She was very organized and diligent at whatever she did. She had a well-earned reputation for feeding crews at harvest time, and Peter said he could always keep a good crew because of her good cooking and especially her delicious pies. Learning from her mother, Catherine was very gifted in handiwork such as crocheting, embroidery and needlepoint. She won several first and second place ribbons at the annual winter fair and enjoyed working on a new entry each year for many years. She also enjoyed gardening and putting up the garden produce each year. She greatly loved family gatherings and hosted many dinners and picnics through the years. Her daughters fondly remember the many family trips they were able to take with Mom and Dad. Catherine encouraged her daughters in music and attended many piano and vocal recitals, and as a result music filled her home through the years. Catherine and Peter enjoyed traveling and went south every winter after their family was raised. They visited every state in the nation, except one, and were able to enjoy cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska and a very meaningful trip with relatives to visit ancestral areas in Holland and tour England and Scotland. Catherine was a member of Grace Bible Church for more than 60 years. She accepted Christ as her savior while listening to the radio ministry of Charles Fuller in her teen years. She was a very gentle, sincere, modest and considerate person who had little trouble in honor preferring the other person (Romans 12:10). Contentment is a word that well-described Catherine. She watched well to the ways of her household like the woman of Proverbs (Proverbs 31). She was a wonderful example of a godly wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren were a special joy to her through the years. We will miss her greatly, but take great comfort and joy in knowing that she is now in the presence of the Lord. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughters, Jane Hansen and Kaye Duncan; her brother, John; and her sisters, Grace, Dena, and Anna. She is survived by her sister, Gertrude (Herman) Kempema; and brothers, Henry (Mae) DeHaan, George (Sophie) DeHaan, and Frank (Vera) DeHaan; and her daughters, Vonnie (Mike) Cole of Bozeman, and Faye (Sheldon) Hultgren of Billings; grandchildren, Julie Langaker, Angle (Gary) Meyers, Jason (Jodi) Camp, Tricia Langaker, Jeff (DeeDee) Camp, Wade (Kelly) Duncan, Laura (Tobias) Burns, Hub Hultgren, and Brandi Hultgren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Hills Cemetery.
