Jitske was pas 7 maanden oud toen de Jappanners Java bereikten en bezetten. Zij is haar hele leven op de vlucht geweest, zwak, ziek en uitgeput, overleed ze, nog geen 4,5 jaar oud in de nacht en in de armen van haar slapende moeder. Tante Emma kon zich niet herinneren dat ze Jitske ooit had horen praten. Ze is begraven door oom Gerrit en oom Henk in een zeepkist op de Hollandse begraafplaats bij Sumedang. Toen Oma Emi enkele maanden later, weer verder op de vlucht moest en afscheid wilde nemen van Jitske, had een Indosesische boer de begraafplaats ontdaan van alle kruizen en stenen en was hij de grond aan het omspitten om er gewassen te planten.
