Nu maakte Louis zijn leven als een marskramer van de producten van huis tot huis gaan. Dit waren de dagen van de depressie. Terwijl een bezoek aan vrienden in DeMotte (Indiana), Louis raakte geïnteresseerd in kocht een farm die te koop en kort daarna was het. Dit is waar Marilyn was geboren. Na woont hier al ongeveer tien jaar in dit Huis ook brand gestoken. Ze leefden in de pastorie van de eerste hervormde kerk, die toen vacant, was totdat ze een huis gekocht een mijl van de stad. Later kocht ze een ander huis in de stad. Het was terwijl het leven in dit huis dat Margaret getroffen door pancreatic kanker was en overleed op 8 augustus 1958.
