Notes about Willem Mantel

Willem Mantel werd geboren op 29 juni 1894 in Delft. Na de Hogere burgerschool (HBS) doorlopen te hebben, behaalde hij in 1921 het diploma van civiel ingenieur. Van 1921 tot 1922 was hij werkzaam bij de Nederlandse Spoorwegen in Utrecht. In 1922 werd Willem Mantel aangesteld tot leraar in de wiskunde aan de Rijks Hogere Burgerschool in Assen, waar hij bleef tot 1934. In deze periode trouwde hij met Jantina G.B.E. Aukema. Zij kregen drie kinderen, een dochter en twee zoons. In 1934 werd hij benoemd tot directeur van de Rijks Hogere Burgerschool en de Rijkskweekschool in Coevorden. Hij was een ferme directeur, streng doch rechtvaardig voor zijn leerlingen, en voor de docenten een directeur met wie het prettig samenwerken was. In augustus 1939 werd Willem Mantel, zoals zo velen, gemobiliseerd. Als reserve kapitein van de Infanterie streed hij in de meidagen van 1940 tegen de Duitse invaller. Over deze periode is weinig bekend. Hij zelf heeft er nooit veel gesproken. Hij moet echter een zware tijd hebben gehad. Het viel zijn omgeving namelijk op dat hij in juni 1940, na uit Duitse krijgsgevangenschap te zijn vrijgelaten, een geheel ander mens geworden was. Nog tijdens de oorlog werd hij weer aangesteld als directeur van deschool in Coevorden.

Vanwege zijn activiteiten als officier in de meidagen van 1940 werd hij in 1941 door de leiding van de verzetsgroep Orde Dienst gevraagd om toe te treden tot de O.D. Hij was betrokken bij het ontvangen en verbergen van gedropte wapens en andere goederen die de groep in staat moest stellen om handelend op te treden zodra de tijd daar rijp voor was. In september 1944 volgde toetreding in de Nederlandse Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (BS). Als districtscommandant was hij bij iedereen bekend en had hij een zware verantwoordelijkheid. Op 9 januari 1945 om 8 uur ’s avonds werd Willem Mantel thuis door de Landwacht gearresteerd. Een van zijn ondercommandanten was tijdens verhoor doorgeslagen. Moedig heeft hij 24 uur alle mishandelingen doorstaan om zijn verzetskameraden de gelegenheid tot onderduiken te geven.

Hij zat aanvankelijk in de gevangenis in Hollandscheveld, later werd hij overgebracht naar de gevangenis in Assen. Daar zat hij gevangen toen een verzetsgroep in de nacht van 6 op 7 maart 1945 een “aanslag” pleegde op de Höherer SS-und PolizeiführerHanns Albin Rauter. In de avond van 7 maart werden vanuit gevangenissen in Assen, Zwolle, Almelo, Colmschate, Doetinchem en Apeldoorn in totaal 117 mannen gehaald. De jongste was 17, de oudste 75 jaar. Al deze mannen, waaronder Willem Mantel, werden in de ochtend van 8 maart 1945 op de plaats waar nu het monument staat als represaille maatregel gefusilleerd.
