Oprichter Gerardus Goldschmeding

Gerardus Goldschmeding, de oprichter van dit bekende familiebedrijf, begon zijn carrière in 1848 bij Pieter Flaes en Georg D. Brünjes, die een fabriekje hadden in pijporgels en pianofortes in de Warmoesstraat 141. De orgelbouwers Flaes & Brünjes waren destijds heel bekend in de orgelwereld. Hun compagnonschap werd in 1869 verbroken.Terwijl Flaes orgelman bleef, verplaatst Brünjes zijn muzikale liefde naar de piano's. Na het overlijden van Brünjes in 1872 kon Goldschmeding het bedrijfje overnemen. De inventaris bestond uit drie piano's en een olielamp. Met de aankoop van twee extra olielampen werd de etalagepresentatie gemoderniseerd. In die tijd waren de pianino of op z'n Italiaans de pianoforte heel populair. Goldschmeding verkocht niet alleen pianino's van eigen fabrikaat, maar ook die van Flaesz, Pleyel en Cuyper. De pianoforte, in 1709 ontworpen door de Italiaan Cristofori, was het eerste toetsinstrument waarop je zacht (piano) en hard (forte) kon spelen. Goldschmeding verkocht ook Duitse en Franse orgels, waarvan het Serafineorgel het bekendste was. Deze werkten volgens een zogenaamd 'drukluchtsysteem'.
