    Nadat hij van zijn vakantiebaantje terug kwam is hij in Barchem (Gelderland) bij Oscar Wonnink langs gegaan om te kijken naar een brommer. Hij werd bijna 16 jaar. Hij heeft een helm op gekregen en is gaan rijden op het zandpad. Aan het eind van dit pad is hij links af het Lenderiet opgereden. Verderop is hij de Borculoseweg overgestoken. Op dat moment kwam er ook een bus aan die hem niet meer kon ontwijken. Arie-Jan was op slag dood. Hij is overleden aan de inwendige bloedingen.
