Durch die Ernennung seines jüngeren Bruders Hermann Billung zum Markgrafen fühlte sich Wichmann zurückgesetzt und gehörte 937/38 zu den Gegnern OTTOS I. Seine Empörung war so groß, dass er das Heer, das nun unter Führung seines Bruders Hermann gegen die Slawen zog, Krankheit vorschützend, verließ. 938 schloß er Frieden mit OTTO I. und hielt ihm bis zu seinem Tode die Treue.
