It could be that Jehiel started a relationship with his sister inlaw Mary [Polly] Cummings while william Hoard was at sea. When william dit not return, from the trip to the pacific whaling grounds, he may have married her. Unless he found awoman whith the same name? In those days there was no social secutity, so people would marry for convinience and security. A widow [and her kids] would need a roof over her head and a widower would need a housekeeper to look after his children. Divorce was no option, but when one's partner died they would look for another partner.
