Notes about Dirk Hopman

The Oude Sluizer Commander of the whaling fleet, Dirk HOPMAN, who made his fist trip in 1767 on the ship "the young Dirk" brought in a load of 1773 items 60, 385, 310, 0, 55, 400, and 370 barrels of whale oil. From these 7 trips, the ship returned 4 times with a cargo bigger then 300 barrels. He sailed on the STRAIT OF DAVIS located on the west coast of Greenland.
Dirk HOPMAN sailed for Johan Beets, owner, from Krommenie. From 1784 till 1790 total of 7 years as commander of the ship " Greenland " and caught in that time 21 whales.
Before that he sailed on the ship " Davis" from 1767 till 1770 for Cornelis Yff, owner from the Westzaan.
In 1770 his ship was damaged in the ice and lost at sea.
These results gave Dirk HOPMAN the opportunity in 1775 to purchase a large country house in the Polder where he was born, for 4600 guilders ($10.000) 100 acres or 44 mornings in seize.
Dirk HOPMAN named the farm GREENLAND named after his last ship and lined the entrance to this property with 2 whale skulls. They are still standing to-day and are a tangible memory of the whaling fleet.
