Mauthausen was een concentratiekamp, gelegen in Oostenrijk bij de plaats Mauthausen ten oosten van Linz. Het was in gebruik van 8 augustus 1938 tot aan de bevrijding door Amerikaanse troepen op 5 mei 1945. In Mauthausen hebben bijna 200.000 personen gevangen gezeten, vooral politieke gevangenen, verzetsmensen en Joden die als ‘strafgeval’ gedeporteerd waren maar ook krijgsgevangenen, Sinti en Roma, Jehova’s getuigen, homoseksuelen en criminelen, waarvan er meer dan 95.000 stierven.
