In 1944 vluchte hij met zijn vriend Raymond de Wijn van het nog door de duitsers bezette gebied naar het reeds bevrijde Zuiden. Zij meldden zich bij de Nederlandse Stoottroepen. Begin mei 1945 bezocht hij vanuit Duitsland zijn ouders i.v.m. hun 25-jarig huwelijk. Daar werd hij onwel en overleed een week later aan een zware longontsteking in het tijdelijke Canadese Hospitaal te Almelo. Zie monument v.d. Ned. Stoottroepen in Beneden-Leeuwen.
