Notes about Kniertje Gerbrants de Wit

n de Oude Kerk ligt een grafsteen van de vijfling die geboren is op 5 januari 1719. Allen dochters waarvan er één levenloos ter wereld kwam en de andere vier slechts één dag geleefd hebben.

Van heinde en verre kwam men naar Scheveningen om de vijfling te zien. Wekenlang reden rijtuigen af en aan – 'de Keizerstraat stond vol met karossen' – en in het vissershuisje aan de Jacob Pronkstraat waar het gezin woonde was het een komen en gaan. Daar was de vijfling te bezichtigen.

De meeste bezoekers lieten na hun bezoek wat geld achter. De bijzondere geboorte werd zo een bron van inkomsten. Dat zal er vast de reden van zijn geweest dat Kniertje en haar (tweede) man Symon Arense Rosendaal besloten om de begrafenis zo lang mogelijk uit te stellen. Vanwege de bijzondere geboorte zijn de kinderen pas 44 dagen na de geboorte – op 18 februari 1719 – begraven in het koor van de Oude Kerk.
