Notes about Pieter Spaans

Pieter Spaans was matroos op het stoomschip AJAX van de KNSM. Dit schip verliet met een lading tarwe onder gezagvoerder J. Lits op 7 augustus 1940 Southampton met bestemming Falmouth. Na voor anker te zijn gegaan in Solent, voer de AJAX op 8 augustus 1940 bij zonsopkomst verder met 5 andere stoomschepen in een onbeschermd convooi in Balmaha's formatie om aan te sluiten bij de schepen varende in het beschermde convooi onder de naam CW9-Peewit dat vertrokken was van Southend op 7 august 1940 om 07.00 u. Op 8 augustus 1940 om 9.00 u werd het schip aangevallen door +/- 50 duikbommenwerpers, die het schip verscheidende malen troffen. Het schip werd zwaar beschadigd en zonk in ongeveer 5 minuten tijd op 15 mijl ten westen van St. Catharina Point-Isle of Wight in positie 50°30' N.B. en 01°40' W.L. Vier leden van de bemanning kwamen om het leven. De matrozen Pieter Spaans (39 jr) en Arie Toet (25 jr) werden gedood, de stoker D. J. Baaij zwaar en 4 andere leden van de bemanning licht gewond. De hoofdmachinist Jacob Bruining Smit (54 jr) kwam om het leven in het water. De ramp had plaats 10`Z.W van St Catharina Point. De geredden werden door een motorboot van de Royal Air Force naar Portsmouth gebracht, de stoker Baaij (34 jr) is op 10 august 1940 alsnog aan zijn verwondingen overleden.D.J. Baaij (34 jr) en J.B. Smit (54 jr) werden begraven in graf (Y-3-25) op Milton Cemetery Portsmouth, UK. Op 6 oktober 1964 werden de lichamen verplaatst naar het Nederlands ereveld Mill Hill te Londen. A.Toet (25 jr) ligt begaven op het Nederlands ereveld Orry-la-Ville te Orry-la-Ville, Frankrijk, terwijl P.
