Het verlies van de Zaandam
Het passagiersschip Zaandam (kapitein Jacob Matthias Stamperius) vertrok uit Kaapstad (Zuid Afrika) op 21 oktober 1942 met een lading koper, bestemd voor New York (USA). Aan boord waren 112 bemanningsleden, 18 Amerikaanse kanonniers voor het boordgeschut en 169 passengers, waarvan de meeste overlevenden waren van de eerder getorpedeerde Amerikaanse schepen Coloradan, Examelia, Chickasaw City, Swiftsure and Firethorn. Om 16.17 uur op 2 november 1942 werd de alleenvarende Zaandam getroffen door een torpedo aan bakboordzijde in de machinekamer, afgevuurd door de Duitse onderzeeboot U-174 (Fregattenkapitän Ulrich Thilo), op ongeveer 300 mijl ten noorden van Cape Sao Roque (Brazilië). Om 16.28 uur trof een tweede torpedo het schip tussen ruim 2 en 3 aan bakboordzijde, waarna de Zaandam over de boeg wegzakte en binnen twee minuten zonk. De kapitein, 55 bemanningsleden (waaronder olieman Dijkhuizen), tien Amerikaanse kanonniers en 69 passagiers verloren daarbij het leven. De overlevenden verlieten het schip in drie reddingboten en twee vlotten. De U-174 kwam boven water en ondervroeg de inzittenden, waarna de onderzeeboot verdween. In de dagen daarna raakten de reddingboten en vlotten verspreid en verloren elkaar uit het oog. Op 7 november werden 106 overlevenden in twee reddingboten gevonden en gered door de Amerikaanse tanker Gulfstate. Twee slachtoffers overleden aan boord aan hun verwondingen, en een derde kwam later om in Belem (Brazilië), na eerst te zijn overgezet met drie andere gewonden op het Amerikaanse oorlogsschip USS Winslow (DD 359) die hen daar vervolgens aan wal bracht. Op 10 november bereikte de derde reddingboot, zwaar lekkend en beschadigd, de kust nabij Barreirinhas (Brazilië), waar later nog twee mannen stierven aan hun ontberingen en daar begraven werden. Drie overlevenden op een vlot werden pas opgepikt op 24 januari 1943 na 83 dagen (!) op zee te hebben doorgebracht. Het Amerikaanse patrouilleschip USS PC-576 vond ze, bezig met de begeleiding van het konvooi TB-3 van Trinidad naar Brazilië. Ze waren zwaar ondervoed en werden twee dagen met vloeibaar voedsel gevoed. Na aankomst in Pernambuco (Brazilië) verbleven ze nog zes weken in het ziekenhuis om aan te sterken.
