HET ALOUD GESLACHT eerst als uit die nevelen te voorschijn komt, is het reeds omhuld met eenen glans van roemrijke dapperheid en heldenmoed, dier tijden waardig. Zoo vermelden onze chronijken in de twaalfde eeuw HESSEL DOECKES VAN MARTENA, die door zijnen vader naar Italië ter îeering gezonden, weldrade gunsteling, togtgenoot en vriend van den Keizer FRIDERICUS Barbarossa werd, die hem Ridder maakte, en bevel over tienduizend paarden gaf. Elf jaren had hij den Keizer gediend, toen hij, bijna het slagtoffer van minnenijd om de hand eener Gravinne VAN STOLBERG geworden, ten jare 1170, in het bestormen van Milaan, sneuvelde.
