Tijdens mijn zoektocht naar mijn familienaam stuitte ik op het huwelijk van Geeske van Silvolt met Evert Geurs van Holland, begin 1745. Mijn eerste vraag was: hoe komt Evert aan de naam `Holland'? Afgezien van het feit dat verschillende familieleden zich ruim een halve eeuw later in opdracht van Napoleon in 1812 lieten registreren als van Holland, is het door mijn onderzoek nu duidelijk geworden dat de familienaam is afgeleid van de naam van de boerderij waarop zijn ouders Geurt Evertsen en Evertje Berntsen gewoond en gewerkt hebben. Als een nieuwe maancedulle van de verpondingen over de jaren 1714-1719 is aangelegd, blijkt Willem Slophoos in 1713 als eerste bewoner van `Holland' te worden vermeld. Het ligt voor de hand te veronderstellen dat Willem deze boerderij of bouwmanswoning zo genoemd heeft, maar de reden daarvoor is onduidelijk..
