Notes about Gerrit Jan Dijkerman

UIt het bevolkingsregister Den Helder: Gerrit kwam 27-8-1929 uit Den Haag naar het Instituut (Marine).
Hij vertrok 31-3-1933 naar Soerabaja. Op 1-11-1938 kwam hij via Amsterdam naar Den Helder (Soembastraat 38), samen met vrouw en dochter.

Tijdens de slag in de Javazee op 27 februari 1942 werd de kruiser Hr.Ms. Java omstreeks 23.20 uur aan stuurboord bij de achtermunitiebergplaats getroffen door een torpedo van een der Japanse zware kruisers. Het achterschip brak af ter hoogte van de longroom, de achtermachinekamer liep vol en het schip maakte snel slagzij over stuurboord. Het zonk binnen vijftien minuten. Waarschijnlijk gingen 518 opvarenden12 met het schip ten onder. De commandant, «i»kapitein ter zee Ph.B.M. van Straelen, «/i»kon aanvankelijk op een in het water drijvende bamboehouten rustbank klauteren, doch is nooit meer terug gezien. «i»Sergeant der mariniers W. van Nek «/i»raakte, overdekt met brandwonden, te water en werd op een vlot getrokken. Hij overleed de volgende dag aan zijn verwondingen en kreeg een zeemansgraf.
Op 12 december 1960 is naar «i»Van Straelen «/i»een ondiepwatermijnenveger vernoemd, terwijl in Soest een straat zijn naam kreeg.
