De kersttijd: St. Steffen (26 december) en St. Jan (27 december) waren gewijde dagen voor de Friese boerenbevolking uit die tijd. Als het werk in de stallen erop zat (want ook met de kerst moeten de koeien gevoerd en gemolken worden) zat men genoegzaam bijeen rond het knappend haardvuur. Het kerstblok, ook wel achteraanblok geheten, werd achter tegen de vuurplaat gezet. Het moest als het even kon blijven doorsmeulen gedurende de beide kerstdagen. Op St. Steffen ging de fraai gebogen drinkhoorn rond, gevuld met eigen gebrouwen kerstbier. Ook in het dorp was het kerstfeest. De bakkers hielden verlotingen van kerstgebak onder het jonge volk. De kastelein organiseerde een 'schutjas' partij en een jachtpartij, waarbij rijkelijk kerstbier werd geschonken. Op St. Steffen dag mocht een ieder vrij jagen. Op andere dagen was de jacht voorbehouden aan de heren Staten van Friesland. (bron: Us Heit Bier)
