Hij diende, evenals zijn broer Gerrit, bij de Koninklijke Marine waar hij in dienst trad als jongen toen hij veertien(14) jaar was.
Hij had een succesvolle loopbaan en klom op tot de hoogste rang in zijn dienstvak de rang van Major Zeilmaker.
Hij maakte een aantal tochten in Oost Indië en vocht in de Atjeh oorlog en in de Lombok oorlog, waarvoor hij onderscheiden werd met het expeditie kruis met de gespen Atjeh en Lombok. Hij was de laatste Major Zeilmaker in de Marine en diende een tijd als schipper van het jacht "De Kampioen" waarmee hij wedstrijden zeilde en tochten maakte met Prins Hendrik, de echtgenoot van koningin Wilhelmina.
Hij diende verder op de Neptunis en de Urania, de laatste zeilschepen van de Koninklijke Marine.

Het echtpaar Noot/van Riel verhuisde weer naar Amsterdam en woonde naast Trijntjes ouders in de Kleine Kattenburgerstraat 3. Dat was tegenover apotheek Vogel en vlak bij het huis waarin de laatste burgemeester van Amsterdam, de Vlucht, werd geboren en opgroeide.
