Bethlehem.
Naam van een gereformeerde familie van kaagschippers, die in de 18de eeuw in Oosterend woonde. De stamvader was Dirk Frederiksz Bethlehem, in 1705 gedoopt als zoon van Frederik Theunisz (die weer een zoon was van een zekere Theunis Frederiksz uit Den Hoorn) en Cornelisje Cornelis. De achternaamwas ontleend aan een familie Bethlehem die in de 17de eeuw bij Harkebuurt woonde. Een zekere Hertje Dirksz had twee zoons: Dirk Hertsz Bethlehem (een zeeman) en Jacob Hertsz Sogh (een schoenmaker die enkele malen burgemeester van Oosterend is geweest), die allebei kinderen met de naam Bethlehem hadden. Daar Trijn Dirks Bethlehem, een dochter van Dirk Hertsz, in 1705 getuige was bij de doop van de eerder genoemde Dirk Frederiksz Bethlehem, ligt het voor de hand, dat er bloedverwantschap tussen beide families bestond, ak valt niet meer precies vast te stellen hoe. De Bethlehem's vertrokken in de 19de eeuw naar Den Helder, waar de naam nu nog voorkomt. Vergeefs werd gezocht naar een band met andere Nederlandse families, die Bethlem of Betlem heten.
